What It Is: Sense from BlackbookHR is a cloud-based "people intelligence" and employee-engagement measurement platform that leverages more than a decade of research by Dr. Brooks Holtom at Georgetown University on talent engagement, individual retention and attrition drivers, and employee flight risk. It allows users to survey their employee populations with the goal of obtaining a deeper understanding of aggregate and sub-organizational indicators of engagement and what BlackbookHR refers to as "embeddedness" -- an  assessment of an employee's connection to his or her job, organization and community. The Sense platform is accessible on all common tablet and smartphone devices. Pricing starts at $249 per year and varies by organization size.

Why We Like It: With Sense, BlackbookHR takes the traditional employee satisfaction or engagement survey and augments it with a research-based and more-complete set of assessment data to better expose overall attachment to the organization and to calculate flight risk. By layering in "outside the workplace" factors such as connection to the community and number and depth of friendships, Sense moves beyond the common or surface-level data points to help organizations better understand their workforces and their key challenges for employee retention, and respond proactively in order to meet workforce-planning challenges. Sense has also been leveraged to help entire cities and regions better understand their overall labor-market challenges and to identify opportunities for addressing local labor requirements.
