There were 71,000 staffing or private-employment agencies worldwide in 2008 -- an increase of 14 percent over the prior year -- with 171,000 branches and global total annual sales revenues of 232 billion Euros (about $318 billion), according to the 2010 annual report of the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies.

Total annual sales revenues for the top 10 agencies account for 33 percent of the global agency market. Japan and the United States are the global leaders by total annual sales revenues, each accounting for 21 percent of the world market, followed by the United Kingdom at 15 percent.

Europe is the leading regional entity by total annual sales revenues, accounting for 48 percent of the global market.
