Workforce-Management Solution Delivers Value and Savings

From the beginning, Parsippany, N.J.-based JHP Pharmaceuticals LLC -- a manufacturer and distributor of sterile medical products -- has been laser focused on cost-efficient, metric-driven and regulatory-compliant administrative solutions to support its business growth.

"We were a new growth company in an acquisition process, and needed a scalable payroll and HRIS solution in just less than eight weeks," explains Carolyn Kaminsky, JHP's director of human resources. "We realistically knew we could not do this alone. We needed a partner who has implementation expertise and would be responsive to our specific needs."

JHP's needs presented clear challenges, especially given the company's tight implementation schedule. Self-service included a Web site as well as a telephone call-center support, since some of JHP's 360 employees might not have ready access to the Internet.

Another key requisite was a strong reporting feature with up-to-date, real-time data.

"Metrics are indispensable," says Kaminsky. "They help you measure and assess progress, and demonstrate how effectively HR is managing issues that are important to the business."

JHP also needed a reliable and compliant way to file a broad range of payroll taxes.

"In addition to federal taxes, we had to file taxes in 15 states due to our extensive field sales network," says Kaminsky. "This requires a great deal of expertise and is an area we seriously considered outsourcing."

Comprehensive Workforce Administration

JHP Pharmaceuticals selected ADP's automated, integrated solutions for HR, benefits administration, payroll and payroll-tax filing services. Under this arrangement, HR, payroll and benefits data resides in a central database, single-data entries automatically update each area and ADP assigns a relationship manager and team of solution experts to JHP to answer questions and work through issues.

"Even before we had an intranet site, we were able to use the site ADP provided to connect our employees with important information, such as benefits summary plan descriptions, enrollment status, company news and policy updates," says Kaminsky. "It gave our employees the ability to make changes to their benefits selections, update personal information and access electronic paystubs and prior W-2s, in addition to other features." 

Costly administrative issues have also been resolved as JHP introduced ADP solutions. "All the data we need in HR and payroll are captured in the ADP system and information is readily retrievable through a great reporting capability," she says.

"Two years ago, our FMLA and other leaves of absence were double what they are today. We worked with our ADP resources to develop a report that not only allows us to track and monitor each leave, but also helps us understand where we needed to make policy changes and whether there were appropriate authorizations."

Effective Solutions Flowed From Timely Implementations

Kaminsky was impressed from the start with ADP's commitment to her company's specific requirements. "ADP listened to our needs. They understood we were on a business-critical timetable," she notes. "Amazingly, we met our deadline, enrolled our employees in benefits, and distributed their first paychecks within eight weeks from the day ADP came into the picture."

JHP experienced economic value and savings in its first year using ADP's solutions. "Without ADP, we would have had to nearly double our HR staff," says Kaminsky.

"That could have cost us over $350,000, given the types of required administrative positions. Our printing and mailing costs, often an ignored expense, remain low. Now, we only need to print a minimal number of annual enrollment materials and our employees download and print benefits information from the Web site as they need them."

In addition to hard- and soft-dollar savings, ADP's solutions have helped JHP Pharmaceuticals maximize the value of its HR staff, allowing HR to focus on strategic, growth-oriented priorities.
