A recent study published by the Public Library of Science concludes that significant errors and other problems are caused by extended durations of work, specifically with regard to medical residents.

The Impact of Extended-Duration Shifts on Medical Errors, Adverse Events, and Attentional Failures was published Dec. 12, 2006. Researchers were from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Harvard Medical School in Boston, the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Vancouver General Hospital and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.
